Within a few years after he came, he was the owner of a farm of 200 acres in the northwestern part of the township, where he passed the remainder of his life. In earlier life, he was an ardent Methodist, but he afterward was one of the prime movers in the organization of the United Brethren Church. His politics were Democratic.

Mr. Elliott was twice married. By the first marriage he had two children, by
the last ten, many of whom still live in Paris Township.

    Birth:
Birth state of Maryland taken from 1850 Census

John married Hannah WESTLAKE before 1806. Hannah (daughter of George WESTLAKE and Mary Mercy SMITH) was born in 1780 in New Jersey; died after 25 Jul 1860 in Union County, Ohio, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Hannah WESTLAKE was born in 1780 in New Jersey (daughter of George WESTLAKE and Mary Mercy SMITH); died after 25 Jul 1860 in Union County, Ohio, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Misc: 9 Aug 1852, Union County, Ohio, United States; Supposed death
    • Residence: 25 Jul 1860, Paris Township, Union, Ohio, United States

    Notes:

Something is confusing about all this.

    1. The 1850 Census shows John Elliott, aged 83, and his wife, Hannah (Westlake) Elliott aged 77, living in Paris Township. Their son, Wellen, age 22, was living with them. (There is something funny here right off the bat. It seems unusual that a couple as old as John and Hannah would have a son, Wellen. So I wonder if he was really a grandson??? Adding to this mystery is that fact that also listed with the family is an Isabel, age 9. Surely she wasn't a daughter; so again, I wonder if we have a grand-daughter and possibly sister to Wellen. (And this isn't what really confuses me)

    2. John Elliott died in 1853, and we have a good gravestone to further document that.

    3. We have this scrap of a stone saying that someone died in 1852, and perhaps it was Hannah. She would have been 79 if it were she, but the stone says 75 years. This is not so bad in and of itself as the notion that she would have been 79 in 1852 comes from the 1850 Census saying that she was 77.

    4. But I completely lose it when it then comes to the 1860 census which shows a 32 year old Wellen living with his wife and family, and in their household is an 80 year old Hannah who was born in New Jersey. Well who provided this information? More likely than not it was Wellen's wife. And she could have been ill-informed or forgetful about Hannah so that she gave the wrong age (80 instead of 85-87) and the wrong birthplace (New Jersey instead of Pennsylvania). But then we wind up with the questions (a) so when did Hannah really die and (b) whose stone is that showing that someone died in 1852 at the age of 75?

    Birth:
According to the 1850 Census her age was 77 which would make her birth year 1773. Her birthplace was given as Pennsylvania.

According to the 1860 Census -- assuming that it was she living with her son, Wellen -- her age was 80 which would make her birth year 1780, and her birthplace was given as New Jersey.

    Misc:
This date can be found in various sources to be Hannah's death date. This is based on the assumption that the broken gravestone showing this date and located near that of her husband, John Elliott, was her stone.

However, the 1860 Census reported that she was still living.

    Residence:
Living with the family of her son, Wellen, and his wife, Mary Jane.

View the 1860 Census that shows this.

    Died:
Since she was listed in the 1860 census, I believe she did not die in 1852 as some suggest, but sometime after the 1860 census.

    Notes:

    Residence:
    The census reads as follows:
Males under ten: 2 [John Jr, 1817 and Samuel, 1810]
    Males 10-16: 1 [George, 1806]
    Males 45 & >: [John Sr, 1767]

    Females under 10: 3 [Sarah, 1820 &? &?]
    Females 10-16: 1 [?]
Females 16-26: 2 [Could these be daughters from his first marriage?]
    Females 26-45: [Hannah]
(The 1860 Census says that Hannah was 80 which would make her 40 in 1820.)
