  Notes	US Congressman. Born in Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio he overcame the childhood loss of both parents to become a successful businessman and influential early twentieth century statesman. In 1868 after graduating from the University of Michigan, he moved to Steubenville, Ohio to begin practicing law. Five years later he established a successful banking business before taking over a lamp chimney factory, where the entrepreneur invented the famous "Gill Furnace". In 1896 he purchased the two local newspapers merging them into a successful enterprise. His political career began in 1869 when he was elected as the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney. After several attempts at winning his party's nomination for Congress, the Republican was awarded for his loyalty by being appointed the nominee for an election held to determine who would fill the vacancy left by the death of Congressman Lorenzo Danford. He won that election and was reelected two more times representing his Ohio district from 1899 to 1903, before being forced to resigned due to failing health. As Congressman he used his dynamic speaking ability to fight for improvements along the Ohio River which bordered his district, vocally support the gold standard and argue for the restructuring of the nation's tariff system which he thought was hurting the American economy. Known for his humanitarian acts he is credited with providing the financial support needed to build Steubenville's first hospital. (bio by: Bigwoo)
