Calls Mrs. Elizabeth Toggenburger to her Eternal Home
Mrs. Elizabeth Manz-Toggenburger was born in Marthalen, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, April 4, 1830, and died at her home in Bluffton, Ohio, July 26, 1903, aged 73 years, 3 months and 22 days. She was married in Switzerland to Jacob Makley [sic] in 1865, who a few years later left there and came to America, with a view of seeking a new and better home for his family. While on the voyage across the ocean, he took sick and died shortly after his arrival in New York City. The deceased with her only son, also left the mother country and arrived at New York City in July, 1869. After a short stay in that city she went to Chicago, where she remained about six months.
She came to Richland township in 1870, where she married Ulrich Toggenburger, residing on a farm four miles south of town. To this union one son was born, who died in infancy. After the death of her husband, in 1883, the deceased moved to Bluffton and has resided here until her death. Although she has been a patient sufferer for some time, she has only been bed-fast for a few weeks.
Funeral services were held at her late residence on Kibler street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J.B. Baer officiating. She was a member of the Reformed church, and was well respected among her neighbors and friends. She leaves one son, Jacob, who has always been faithful in the support and care of his aged mother. She also leaves a brother in Chicago, a half-brother in Iowa and a sister in Alabama to mourn her departure. She was laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery.
