- James W. Hill, 97, Civil War Veteran, Dies This Morning
Broken Hip Sustained in Fall Six Weeks Ago Hastened His Death
James Wiley Hill, 97, veteran of the Civil War and one of the oldest residents of Martins Ferry district, passed away Monday morning at 5:45 in the home of his grandson, Harold Hill, Glen’s Run, two miles north of this city. He was the last of a family of nine children.
He was born on Nixon’s Run about a mile from the place where he died November 19, 1843, son of Elliot and Azuba Hill, early residents of this section, and his entire life had been spent in this immediate vicinity.
He had been in failing health for a couple of years although able to attend patriotic meetings in town until a couple of years ago. He fell some six weeks ago fracturing his hip, and this hastened his death.
He enlisted February 24, 1864 in Co. E, Second Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry and served until the close of the war taking part in several important battles. Enlisting with him was Remadias Barr of this city. They lived in a small town adjoining Martins Ferry, then known as Don and it was from this [that] Don Street at Stop 7 was named.
His wife, Louisa [Watkins] Hill died in 1905. Surviving are two sons: Samuel Hill, Miami, Florida and Chester Hill, Martins Ferry, also 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The body was brought to Heslop mortuary where it will remain for services Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. Russell Osgood, former pastor of First Christian church, will officiate and burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Arrangements are to be made to give him a military burial.
